Welcome to Hardwick Hall!
The Home to Bess of Hardwick
You have successfully navigated yourself through this leg of your mission.

But to earn your badge, you have one more quest.

A bold and determined woman named Bess of Hardwick built the magnificent Hardwick Hall using her own ideas, hard work and clever thinking. Bess believed women should stand up for themselves, and when she was treated unfairly, she was not afraid to speak out. When her first husband died and she was denied the money she was owed, Bess took the matter to court, something very unusual for a woman at the time and she won! Later, when another husband died, she again fought bravely to make sure she was treated fairly.

Bess was also fearless when it came to big decisions. She even arranged a royal marriage for her daughter without asking the Queen’s permission, a risky move that could have ended badly, but Bess stood her ground and only received a stern telling-off.
At Hardwick Hall, Bess wanted the brightest windows in England. When others tried to control the glass trade, she simply set up her own glassworks, making and selling her own glass. Today, as children explore Hardwick Hall’s glowing windows and grand rooms, they can imagine Bess proving that courage, clever ideas and confidence can build something truly extraordinary.

Hardwick Hall is a wonderful place for families to explore history, nature and creativity all in one visit. Children can wander through the grand house, discovering tall windows, secret corners and fascinating stories from the past. The gardens and park are perfect for walks, picnics, and spotting wildlife, while the restaurant is a great place to stop for a snack or meal. Families can also browse the bookshop and shop for souvenirs to remember their day. With so much to see and do, Hardwick Hall offers adventure, learning and fun for everyone in the family.

Come back on Friday 13 February 2026 to complete your challenge and earn your badge!
